Abstract:  Pharmacists have an opportunity to extend their activities in patient care as the emphasis continues to shift from inpatient care to ambulatory care, and some pharmacies are involved in special ambulatory care clinics. This article takes a look at different activities carried out in the ambulatory care pharmacy, with an eye to determining which can result in financial reimbursement and which relate to compounding. Activities discussed include dispensing, compounding, counseling, minimizing medication errors, enhancing compliance therapeutic monitoring and minimizing expenditures. Extemporaneous compounding can be vitally important in ambulatory patient care.
