Abstract:  Creams and lotions are emulsion dosage forms. In this article, the author discusses preparation methods/techniques, incorporating materials into emulsions (emulsion bases: water in oil and emulsion bases: oil in water), theory, the hydrophile-lipophile balance system, preservation of emulsions, antioxidants, flavoring emulsions, specific quality control, stability, general comments on emulsions (viscosity, powders, miscellaneous) and counseling. Tables provide information regarding hydrophile-lipophile balance values of emulsifiers and required hydrophile-lipophile balance values for some common lipid material to prepare o/w emulsions.
